Biography

Dr. Meng Sun is a doctoral supervisor, a “Hundred Talents Program” full professor at the Research Center for Eco‑Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the head of the Intelligent Sensing and Control of Emerging Contaminants research group. He is also a recipient of the Young Changjiang Scholar award from the Ministry of Education and the Young Chief Scientist of a National Key R&D Program project. He concurrently serves as a member of the IWA‑YWP China Youth Committee, a member of the Young Scientists Sub‑committee of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, a Youth Editorial Board member of Engineering (the journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering) and Director of its Office for Environment and Light Industry and Textile Engineering, a Youth Editorial Board member of ACS ES&T Engineering, and an Editorial Board member of RCR Advances and CCL. From 2016 to 2021, he worked full‑time as a postdoctoral researcher and later as an associate research scientist in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Yale University, under the supervision of Professor Menachem Elimelech, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. In 2021, he returned to China and joined the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, and in 2025 he moved full‑time to the Research Center for Eco‑Environmental Sciences, CAS. His research focuses on the coupling principles and methodological innovations of electrochemical water treatment and membrane separation technologies, with emphasis on intelligent sensing and control of emerging contaminants in water, process development, and engineering applications.
Dr. Meng Sun has published over 70 SCI papers as first/corresponding author in journals including Nature Sustainability, Science Advances, Nature Communications, ACS Nano, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Nano Today, Environmental Science & Technology, and Water Research, co‑authored two English monographs, and been granted eight invention patents. His honors include the Ohgano Prize for Water Quality and Environment (Japan) Special Award, the CAS President’s Award, the 2021 ES&T Best Paper Award, the ACS ES&T Engineering Excellence in Review Award 2023, the 2025 IWA (China) Young Professionals Inaugural Mercury Gold Prize (Science Innovation), and the 2026 James J. Morgan Early Career Award Honorable Mention.
